At the core of Zen Buddhism is Zen meditation or Zazen, with 座禅 za meaning sitting. It is basically seated meditation wherein the one practicing it is in good posture, “pushing the sky” with the top of his head, paying careful attention to breathing, until he is fully alert and present.

What Does Zen Mean Today

  1. Zen Teachings of Huang Po Huang-Po (d 850) Our original Buddha-Nature is, in highest truth, devoid of any atom of objectivity. It is void, omnipresent, silent, pure; it is glorious and mysterious peaceful joy — and that is all. Enter deeply into it by awakening to it yourself. That which is before you is it, in all its fullness, utterly complete.
  2. Instead, Zen Buddhism uses this premise to formulate a number of teachings to do with introspection, understanding, self-control and compassion towards others. It is more of an activity than a belief system, and if we practise it then we will be better off as a result.
